Join Anna of The Hackney Quilter to make your very own baby size patchwork quilt that you can gift or keep. Over four relaxed mornings you will learn the essential skills to make hand-quilted 36'' x 36'' mini quilt which is the perfect size for tummy time or adding a dash of colour to your room as a striking wall hanging. Anna will be there to guide you through every step so you will finish the class with creative confidence, forever skills and a quilt that you will be loved year after year!

Skill level: Beginners

This comprehensive course is suitable for both beginners looking for ways to be more mindful and creative, as well as for more experienced sewists trying patchwork and quilting for the first time. Basic knowledge of machine sewing is recommended to get the most from this course. I suggest attending a Get to Know Your Sewing Machine morning prior to attending if you need to (re)familiarise yourself with a machine.

This class is for you if:

  • You’re a patchwork and quilting beginner!
  • You have always wanted to make a patchwork quilt but didn't know where to start
  • You'd love to make a meaningful handmade gift for someone special
  • You want to spend more time being creative and less time on your phone
  • You love other textile crafts like knitting, crochet or garment making
  • You’d love to experience the wellness benefits that making with your hands can bring
  • You'd like to enjoy the company of fellow craft lovers and belong to a community of creatives

What You'll Learn:

Anna will guide you through all stages of making a patchwork quilt using the beginner friendly Rail Fence block. Your finished quilt will be the prefect size to use as a wall hanging or baby play mat. You'll also take home the confidence to tackle your next quilting project on your own. You'll learn about:

  • Understanding a quilt pattern
  • Choosing fabrics and colours
  • Suitable tools to make your life easy
  • Prepping and cutting fabric for pristine results
  • Accurate machine piecing techniques
  • Basting your quilt without breaking your back
  • The fundamentals of hand quilting
  • Simple binding methods for the finishing touch

What to Bring:

You will need to bring thread and materials and a few tools. Guidance will be emailed to you after sign up and optional kits will also be available to purchase to make things easy.

Sewing machines will be provided but you are very welcome to bring your own. There will be some homework, depending on your progress in class, so you will need access to a basic sewing machine between sessions.

A selection of tools will be available to share in class but you may also like to bring your own and you might need some for any homework depending on your progress. A full list of tools and fabric requirements will be sent to you before the class.

When and Where:

20 hours in person teaching over three weeks with homework.  10am - 4pm, Saturday September 12th, 19th, 26th.

  • "Anna managed to give each individual a good amount of one to one time. She has a wealth of knowledge of the quilting world and so this intimate, informal setting was the perfect introduction and Anna was the perfect guide!"

  • “Thank you for a brilliant day. I'd had low confidence about approaching my first quilting project on my own, but after the workshop I feel really capable of starting something on my own, making design choices and working through the steps to make them come to life. It really gave me the boost I needed to work on my own project.”

  • "Honestly, I enjoyed it all. Brilliantly taught, methodical and patient, never hurried. The venue is great. The other people on the course were interesting and nice to be around. I'm really pleased with the quilting I did."

  • "It was such a great day! Anna is a calm, encouraging and thoughtful teacher, and managed everyone's different learning styles and levels really well."
